Before you can file for bankruptcy, you must attend a credit counseling court by a bankruptcy court-approved provider. You can find these providers listed on the US bankruptcy court website. When you complete the course, you will receive a certificate for you to file with the bankruptcy court with your bankruptcy petition.

Counseling Certificate

The pre-bankruptcy counseling course focuses on bankruptcies and alternatives to bankruptcies. The course will help you understand the bankruptcy process from start to finish as well as other options such as debt assistance programs and debt consolidation. The credit counseling course will take approximately 60 to 90 minutes to complete. This course can be taken online, over the phone, or in person. You will be going over your finances to determine if bankruptcy is the best option for you.

Cost

The cost of the pre-bankruptcy credit counseling course depends on which services you choose, but generally, the fees will be between $15 and $50.

Two Financial Courses

You will not be able to submit your petition without first completing the credit counseling course within 180 days of filing your paperwork with the court. During the bankruptcy case, you will be required to take another credit counseling course that will teach you more about budgeting and how to manage her finances.
